We stood there for some time, watching the stream of passengers dissolve into the crowd, the ready smiles on our faces wilting as the stream dwindled to a trickle and eventually ran dry. We were both still waiting. Her mother and my sister had been bumped to a later flight, it happened, leaving the two of us an hour to get to know each other. I bought her coffee at an airport bar, and ten years later her mother and my sister still can’t stop telling the story at Christmastime.
